@BmillsBilly You can make endless diagrams showing connections between the illustrations in some folklore books with Pre-Raph aesthetics, but I suspect the real linkage is a sense of shared imaginative grandeur.

@BmillsBilly What others see in the Pre-Raphs as imaginative bombast, a folkloric loving person might feel as connective psychic tissue to manifestation of old stories that this time are a bit more dolled up and to the nines, but are still the old stories strolling around.

Hookland 3/3/21 19:58:53

@BmillsBilly And you wouldn‰Ûªt be wrong in my view, but pretty gets derided a lot and the emotional connective element that may be at the core pretty works often gets ignored in a way that makes me feel queasy. Work that makes people feel has value, even if I think it‰Ûªs all surface glamour.

@BmillsBilly However, while my work aims to gut the bucolic, work that doesn‰Ûªt is not necessarily popular for repeating the falsehood, but for giving a sense of something beyond. If you want the real reason the Venn of folklore and Pre-Raph is so big, I suspect it is that, not the prettiness.

Hookland 3/3/21 20:12:22

@BmillsBilly While I might find a lot of Pre-Raph trite and tepid, it‰Ûªs no different to poems in greeting cards/adored books which I feel are just ghastly, they do well because they connect. Prettiness as a shortcut to connection, but they are still connecting, delivering a sense of folklore.

@BmillsBilly Most folklorists I know are more obsessed with Paul Nash, Fay Godwin, Zezislaw Beksiãski et al, but I may not be typical of folkloric demographics.

Magic is often poisoned by ink. Magic is often made sick by a desire to make it ancient. Witches who claim unbroken pedigree fantasies pale against witches who are honest enough to deal with a newfound connection to the eternality of nature. – #EmilyBanting #WitchWednesday

Some take to shore after a storm in the hope of treasures. The salt-hag walks the shore everyday in absolute knowledge of her treasures. A wave-polished pebble to tell tomorrow, bladder wrack for medicine or magical knots. Winds that whisper news. – #EmilyBanting #WitchWednesday https://t.co/2gwqLvge6W
